This course focuses on fundamental concepts and theories of Geographic Information System (GIS) and its applications. The content of the course includes introduction to GIS, data collection, digitalization, analysis and modelling with GIS, raster data and algorism, digital terrain model, digital cartography, and remote sensing. Some filed measurement with GPS are also included. An important part is the practical exercises with GIS, often as applications in Earth Sciences. In addition, the students are expected to carry out an independent project using GIS techniques in the end of the course.
Students are expected to have competence and skills in use of MS Windows XP based PC (file management, directories, subdirectories, copying, etc), MS office and Internet usage. For students from Earth Science, 90 hp credits in the subject is required. For students from other subjects, an individual assessment and approval will be needed.
The literatures include a course book and recommended reading materials by the lecturers. The book is meant to keep the course structured and ensure the participants' understanding of the fundamental aspects of GIS concepts, while the other reading materials can cover the specific and more practical aspects of GIS programs. In addition, the lectures OHs and notes, as well as the exercises and suggested reading material from the lecturers will be put on the download site of the course which is password protected. The participants of the course will get the password during the introduction of the course.

The book can preferably be bought from the Chalmers bookstore Cremona (see the location of the bookstore on a map here). It is important that you have the book at your hand when the course starts since self-study is an important part of the course!
